A recent post on mdlinx.com addressed the high numbers of physicians leaving practice for nonclinical careers and gave advice for those considering making such a change. The author, Alistair Gardiner, first highlighted some of the results from the recent Medscape 2021 Nonclinical Physician Careers Report. Burnout was the top reason for considering a nonclinical career, accounting for 34% of respondents, and Covid was cited specifically by 7%. Digging further into the effect of the Covid pandemic, the post highlighted a September article in NEJM Network from a study that explored this topic in more detail.

So, what’s the advice for doctors looking to change careers? An article in NEJM CareerCenter highlights some of the more common nonclinical career options for physicians, which are increasingly familiar to readers of PRNresource.com. Their recommnendations are:

“Thoroughly explore your options – and your motivations”

“Start networking and keep doing it”

“Don’t quit your day job – yet – and don’t expect greener pastures”
