Expanding Practice Horizons

The annual meeting of the Maryland Society of Anesthesiologists will include several presentations on career evolution and non-clinical career options.

 

The meeting, “Expanding Practice Horizons: Enhancing the Profession,” is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th, 2008, from 8:30AM-2:00PM at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis, Maryland.

 

What is it?
* A one-day conference for MSA members, non-members, and physician colleagues!
* A day to explore opportunities to enrich your practice experience!
* A day to learn how physicians can make the most of their medical training!

 

Program
* Make plans to attend all 3 sessions!
* At the end of this program participants will be able to:

-Interpret the impact the state of the current health care system has on their profession.
-Identify and Discuss other practice opportunities that can benefit their current practice and profession.
-Identify how they can maximize their education and experience as a physician.
-Describe the roles a physician can play clinically and non-clinically to the benefit of patient care.

* Afterwards join the MSA for a special CHOCOLATE TASTING event to network with your colleagues and the vendors supporting the day’s events.

 

Speakers

 

Session I: (8:50–9:50 am) “Your Career: A Closer Look”

 

Michael J. McLaughlin, MD – Peloton Advantage
Dr. McLaughlin is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Peloton Advantage, a medical communications company based in Parsippany, NJ.  He received degrees from Harvard College and Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. After four years in clinical practice as a plastic surgeon and hand specialist, he made a career change to medical communications. He attained the position of Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer, at Cardinal Health, before leaving to start Peloton Advantage. 

 

Dr. McLaughlin founded Physician Renaissance Network (www.prnresource.com), a service for doctors with non-clinical careers and interests. He wrote Do You Feel Like You Wasted All That Training?: Questions from Doctors Considering a Career Change, advises physicians considering non-clinical careers, and speaks on this topic at events across the country.  A Senior Scholar in the Thomas Jefferson University Department of Health Policy, he lives in Pennington, NJ, with his family.

 

Session II: (10:00am – 10:30am) “Medicine Down Under – International Locum Tenens” 

 

Dena Sween – Global Medical Staffing, Ltd.
Dena is a Team Leader for GMS.  Global Medical is the original pioneer of international physician staffing and continues to be the largest group placing medical doctors into Australia and New Zealand. Since their inception in 1994 they have placed thousands of doctors into overseas assignments. Global Medical is privately owned and operated, financially sound and has a reputation amongst doctors for its attention to detail and excellent service.  Dena will share how international locums can be an alternative career or retirement option for physicians looking for a change of pace.

 

Session III: (10:35am – 12:05pm) “Enriching Your Practice Experience”

 

Thomas Wherry M.D. – Consulting Medical Director, Health Inventures, LLC
Thomas Wherry, M.D., has worked with Health Inventures, LLC (formerly Johnson and Johnson Health Care Services) since 1996.  In addition to his roles as Medical Director for the Surgery Center of Maryland and Consulting Medical Director for Health Inventures, he has collaborated with professionals in the United Kingdom and Japan to improve the delivery of ambulatory surgery.  He is currently serving as a board member for Mid-Atlantic Practice Management, the management arm for First Colonies Anesthesia Associates, a large anesthesia group that employs over 120 anesthesiologists.  More recently, he has joined forces with Delmarva Health Solutions, Inc. to assist hospitals and major health systems in developing innovative strategies to slow the emerging anesthesia service subsidy crisis.

Dr. Wherry, graduated from Ohio State University and earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati.  He completed a residency in Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Wherry is board certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. 

 

Gebhard Wagener M.D.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières MSF is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 70 countries.  Dr. Wagner is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Columbia University (NY) and will share his experiences working overseas with MSF.

 

Jean Rinaldo MD MPH – Foreign Service Regional Medical Officer and Director of Occupational Health– US State Department
Dr. Rinaldo currently serves as Director of Occupational and Travel Medicine (M/MED/DASHO) US.  Department of State: currently supervising four travel medicine clinics, and addresses worldwide  deployment medical questions which arise from all of the health units at our overseas embassies.
