Resume Tips

What are the top three things an employer looks for on a resume? Here are some resume tips from Career Change Corner Guest Editor and mentor Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley.

1.  Can the candidate solve the specific problems I have today?

An employer is searching for evidence that you can solve their unique top problems.  This is important because most resumes focus on “I” and “my accomplishments”, highlighting how wonderful the candidate might be.  This is great, but there are MANY great resumes out there.  You want to sell yourself over the next candidate.

Action step:
Do your research to find out the specific problems, challenges, and goals a company has today

2.  Can the candidate build company value?

A company is willing to pay you because they believe you will make them more money than they pay – You are an investment. The best way you can demonstrate that you’re a profitable investment is to demonstrate how you’ve already built value for past employers and clients. Most candidates forget this aspect, the “What’s in it for me” from the company and hiring manager.

Action step:
In addition to the previous action step, do your research to find out the type of value likely to be important to this specific company, department and manager

Then, translate your accomplishments to company value – OUTCOMES

3.  Will the candidate fit in with the company’s culture?

Your resume gives clues about how you’ll fit in with the company’s culture through personal branding.

Action step:
Learn as much as you can about a company’s culture before applying for a position

Then, use personal branding to show chemistry and fit

Remember to be who you are – embrace ageism and your unique situation

Look closely at your resume…or better yet, have someone else look closely at it. Instead of asking the generic “What do you think?” ask your reviewer to view your resume as a specific targeted employer would do.
