We came across a posting calling for “Volunteer Doctors Needed to Teach Kids about Drugs” in Texas.
The post reads: “Doctors who wish to teach elementary and middle school children the importance of saying ‘no’ to illegal drugs are needed now. For one, three-hour period in the fall and one, three-hour period in the spring, a volunteer physician will be paired with an attorney, and the two will visit a local elementary or middle school to address children about the medical and legal consequences of drug abuse. Physicians will inform the students about how abusing drugs, alcohol and tobacco can damage their minds and growing bodies, while lawyers will discuss the perils that await youth who enter the criminal justice system. ‘Show and tell’ aids are used to cement the message. For example, human lungs damaged by smoking and handcuffs worn by juvenile offenders have been used in past presentations.”
The program is administered by the Houston Bar Association, and so far has reached more than 40,000 students in local school districts.
