Effective teams are essential in many aspects of life. For physicians, this is most evident in the immediate life and death settings of the emergency room, the operating room, and intensive care units, but extends to virtually all clinical care. In the nonclinical realm, highly functional teams are also crucial to success.
Harvard Professor Amy Edmondson is an expert on building teams. Her Ted Talk on “How to Turn a Group of Strangers into a Team” hilights some of the key elements of successful teams. Here is a description of her talk:
“Business school professor Amy Edmondson studies ‘teaming,’ where people come together quickly (and often temporarily) to solve new, urgent or unusual problems. Recalling stories of teamwork on the fly, such as the incredible rescue of 33 miners trapped half a mile underground in Chile in 2010, Edmondson shares the elements needed to turn a group of strangers into a quick-thinking team that can nimbly respond to challenges.”
PRN readers interested in nonclinical careers for physicians or physician career change might find this talk particularly helpful.
