Software Advice recently reported results of a survey showing high rates of physician burnout and desires to leave clinical practice. The study also highlighted the most common burnout symptoms of the past eighteen months and ways to relieve physicians in the future.
The survey included 207 family and general practitioners and 50 mental health therapists. The results showed that 25% of those surveyed have considered a career change during the pandemic, and an additional 39% have considered early retirement.
Of those surveyed, 64% considered leaving their job. The 25% who considered a career change provided a wide range of responses when asked what they would do next. Consulting and teaching in the medical field were top choices, many stated jobs outside of healthcare such as music, photography, culinary arts and restaurant ownership.
